The Drinks Dentists Hate Most |
|
Just because a sports drink quenches your thirst as well as water, it doesn't mean it's as good for you. A recent study from the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore found that energy drinks and sports drinks can be abrasive on tooth enamel, maybe even more so than cola. "Drinks that are sugary or acidic are the worst drinks for your teeth," says Matt Messina, D.D.S., consumer adviser for the American Dental Association. "The biggest offender is probably soda, but other beverages can also cause the protective enamel to dissolve away." According to the study, while all drinks eroded tooth enamel somewhat, the most damage occurred with citrus-flavored drinks like lemonade, energy drinks, sports drinks, fitness water, iced tea and cola. "Having a beverage every now and then isn't the problem," says Dr. Messina. "It's when you sip it continuously that you get the constant breakdown of enamel." If you use sports or energy drinks when you work out, drink them quickly rather than taking a swig every few minutes. Or just choose water instead: It keeps you hydrated while protecting your smile.

Here are some tips: The secret to wearing a strong red is feeling comfortable. In decorating our lips with red, we're calling bold attention to our every pout, bite, lick, frown and smile, so red lips are not for the faint of heart, the shy or the tentative. |
