Are you having trouble losing weight even though you're eating healthy foods? Glycemic load could be the answer. An article in the December 2005 issue of the journal Diabetes Care has provided some evidence that this may be the case for you.
If you happen to have a high level of insulin secretion, which is important in glucose (sugar) metabolism, eating low glycemic load foods could help you lose weight. According to the chief author of the study Dr. Roberts of the Tuft's School of Nutrition Science, "A food's glycemic load is a relative measure of how much carbohydrate is in the diet and how quickly that food is converted in the body to blood sugar. Foods with lower numbers typically have a greater proportion of protein and fat, which usually result in a smaller rise in blood glucose following a meal. "
What foods can you eat that have a low glycemic load? Examples of low glycemic load foods include salads with oil and vinegar dressing, high fat granola cereal, and most fresh fruits and vegetables. So gobble up cereal, fruits, vegetables, and salads with oil (preferably olive for your heart) and vinegar! See if this works for you. |
