Want to blow a job interview? It's easy! Show up late for the appointment, dress inappropriately and be sure to tell a stupid joke.
Many candidates don't understand a basic point: You're being sized up from the minute you step into the office, so be quick-witted, don't let your guard down—and don't snarl at the receptionist.
"Many people don't realize that when the interviewer says, 'I just want you to meet my boss,' it is, in fact, an interview," says Dennis Gros, president of Gros Plastics Recruiters in Brentwood, Tenn., a headhunter that seeks engineers, sales representatives and management personnel for the plastics manufacturing and packaging industries.

|
Does the thought of speaking before a large group of people make you nauseous? I remember there was one study that shows more people fear public speaking than death. How about a small group? Experts say when you can't effectively communicate with co-workers or your boss it could cost you a raise or promotion. Now, learn how to master your speaking skills and find the right words every time. Actor Kirsten D'Aurelio, President of VoiceScape, uses acting techniques to help people polish their presentation skills and get ahead in their careers. She says: "If you can't communicate your ideas and your body of knowledge cleanly, there is somebody waiting outside the door who can. And in this competitive job market, you're going to be passed over." To avoid that, try these tips: number one, get out the camcorder and tape yourself. This way, you'll see what others see. Next, find ways to speak in public, like reading the minutes at a club meeting. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll become. Also, five minutes before you give a speech take slow, deep breaths to help you relax Something else to think about with presentation skills is your voice. It's your voice that represents you and your company so it's essential to speak clearly and confidently. |

Tips for Dealing With Negative Coworkers |
|
Having coworkers who are always complaining? Deal with genuinely negative people by spending as little time with them as possible. Just as you set limits with the coworkers whose negativity you believe is baseless or unwarranted, you need to set limits with negative people. You can deal with them in these ways. - Avoid spending time with a negative coworker.
- If you are forced, through your role in the company, to work with a negative person, set limits. Do not allow yourself to be drawn into negative discussions. Tell the negative coworker, you prefer to think about your job positively.
- Suggest the negative person seek assistance from human resources or their supervisor.
- If all else fails, talk to your own supervisor or human resources staff about the challenges you are experiencing in dealing with the negative person. Your supervisor may have ideas, may be willing to address the negativity, and may address the issue with the negative person’s supervisor.
- If negativity among employees in your company is persistent, and the negativity affects your ability to professionally perform your work, you may want to consider moving on. Your current culture will not support your desired work environment. And, if no one is working to improve a work culture that enables negativity, don’t expect the culture to change any time soon.
