Learning From Your Mentor When Begin Your Career

The mentor is typically more experienced than the protege. He or she possesses the wisdom that only experience can provide. The protege is someone who is looking to move up the career ladder, usually following in the footsteps of the mentor. The protégé receives guidance and helpful advice.

Many companies have programs for matching new hires with those already established in their jobs. Professional organizations may also have mentoring programs available.

It is important to choose a mentor whose goals are similar to your own. It is important, as well, to find someone who is on the same career path. Choose a mentor who has time to give to this relationship. Likewise, you must find the time to participate. As the one who will benefit most, you must make the initial step in establishing contact with a potential mentor. You must also work hard to maintain the relationship.
