How to nurture compassion

 With 20 million plus families in the United States having a child with special needs, more children with challenges are being mainstreamed into America's public schools. Here are some specific ways to make kids feel more comfortable around children with special needs.

Unfortunately, too often, those without special needs feel uncomfortable around a classmate who seems out-of-sync. What's more, they can translate their discomfort into ugly behaviors, such as verbally demeaning or physically hurting the individual with differences. Helping youngsters become more sensitive is always important.

"First, parents should emphasize that these kids are just like them," says Aileen Weiss of South Carolina, whose daughter Vicki was born with Sturge Weber, a rare syndrome giving Vicki physical and mental differences. "They have the same hurts, fears and joys even though they may be unable to express them because of their limitations."

Committed relationship increases happiness
 How committed your relationship is goes hand in hand with happiness and well-being, study discovers. People in relationships are generally happier than other people, a new Cornell University study finds. And spouses have the highest sense of well-being, whether they are happily married or not. The study of measures of well-being and happiness found that people who cohabit are next on the scale of happiness, followed by those in steady relationships and then those in casual relationships. Un-partnered people report the lowest levels of well-being.

Anticipation Plays A Powerful Role In Human Memory
 Psychologists have long known that memories of disturbing emotional events - such as an act of violence or the unexpected death of a loved one - are more vivid and deeply imprinted in the brain than mundane recollections of everyday matters.

Probing deeper into how such memories form, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have found that the mere anticipation of a fearful situation can fire up two memory-forming regions of the brain - even before the event has occurred.

Tall Women More Likely to Have Twins
 A researcher who specializes in multiple-birth pregnancies has confirmed that taller women are more likely to have twins. Taller women have more of an insulin-like growth factor that has been linked to height and to the rate of twins in previous work. Dr. Gary Steinman, an obstetrician at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, compared heights of 125 women who had twins and 24 who had triplets to the average height of U.S. women.
