Child Car Seat could be Dangerous

BALTIMORE (Ivanhoe Broadcast News) -- An increasing number of kids are unable to use child car safety seats or their parents have them in the wrong size seat, potentially endangering their young lives. Is your child in danger?

Fifteen-month-old Darian Nixon weighs 36 pounds. And finding a car seat for this big bundle of joy has been nearly impossible.

"Every single one I saw she was over the weight limit," says Darian's mother, Marline. "It was very, very difficult and very frustrating to not find a car seat for her."

Experts at Johns Hopkins special ordered Darian a bigger car seat when she first outgrew hers at 8 months. But a recent study says a lot of children haven't gotten this help.

"There's close to 300,000 children we identified who are too big for standardly available car seats -- too big in terms of their weight," Wendy Shields, a research associate at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, tells Ivanhoe.
